The European Commission announced that Bulgaria and Romania will officially join the Schengen Area on March 31. The next step involves the EU Council determining the date when internal land border checks between Bulgaria, Romania, and other Schengen countries will be lifted. Previously, EU member states had reached an agreement with Bulgaria and Romania regarding the removal of air and maritime border controls.
As of March 31, 2024, there will be no more checks on personnel crossing the internal air and maritime borders between these two countries and other nations within the Schengen Area.
