BMW Unveils Plans for 30% Longer Range EVs with Innovative In-House Battery Technology

BMW is set to enhance the range of its upcoming electric vehicles (EVs) by 30% with the introduction of custom-designed batteries. The company has been gradually revealing details about its new Neue Klasse line of EVs, which will feature striking designs, advanced cabin technology, and long-range batteries developed in-house.

At an event held in Landshut, Germany, home to BMW’s largest component plant, the company unveiled its sixth-generation eDrive technology (referred to as Gen6). This includes innovative 800-V batteries that promise significant improvements in performance. The high-voltage batteries are expected to charge 30% faster and provide 30% greater range compared to the current Gen5 models. Unlike the prismatic cells used in previous batteries, the new cylindrical cells are said to be 20% more energy-dense, lose 40% less energy than their predecessors, and weigh 10% less.

The new batteries will also enable bidirectional charging, allowing the vehicle to power appliances or even a home during outages. BMW has designed these batteries to be slimmer, facilitating their integration into a variety of upcoming EV models, where they will also serve as structural components.

Additionally, BMW has developed the BMW Energy Master, a central control unit for the battery, in-house. This innovation will allow the company to deliver over-the-air performance updates for the unit.

With a fresh design language, engaging cabin features, and a customized ECU to enhance the driving experience, BMW is eager to build anticipation for its Neue Klasse range. The introduction of these vehicles is expected to begin as early as this year, starting with the replacement for the iX3 SUV, followed by a sedan.

As we await the arrival of the iX3 replacement later this year, it remains to be seen if these innovations will translate into an EV that drivers will find appealing.
