BMW Unveils Plans for 30% Longer Range Electric Vehicles with Innovative Custom Batteries

BMW

BMW has been gradually unveiling details about its upcoming Neue Klasse range of electric vehicles (EVs), and the latest announcement highlights innovative battery technology aimed at extending driving range. During an event in Landshut, Germany—home to BMW’s largest component plant—the company introduced its sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology (referred to as Gen6). This includes 800-V batteries developed in-house, boasting impressive specifications.

The new high-voltage batteries are expected to provide a remarkable 30% increase in range and 30% faster charging compared to the current Gen5 models. Unlike the previous prismatic cells, these new batteries are cylindrical, offering 20% greater energy density. Additionally, they will lose 40% less energy than their Gen5 counterparts and weigh 10% less.

These advanced batteries will also feature bidirectional charging capabilities, allowing the vehicle to power household appliances or even your home temporarily. BMW has designed the batteries to be slimmer, enabling them to fit into a variety of upcoming EV models, while also serving as a structural component for all Neue Klasse vehicles.

The company has developed a central control unit, known as the BMW Energy Master, which will sit atop the battery. This unit will allow for over-the-air performance updates, enhancing the battery’s functionality over time.

BMW is eager to generate excitement for this next chapter in its evolution. With a bold new design language, improved cabin features, and a custom Electronic Control Unit (ECU) aimed at delivering an engaging driving experience, the Neue Klasse range appears promising. The first vehicles are set to debut as early as this year, starting with a replacement for the iX3 SUV, followed by a sedan.

We will have to wait until later this year for the launch of the iX3 successor to see if this new direction translates into a desirable EV experience.
