Beijing Institute of General Artificial Intelligence Unveils Next-Generation Humanoid Robot Motion Framework “Tongji”

Date: March 6, 2026

Beijing Institute of General Artificial Intelligence has launched its next-generation humanoid robot motion framework, “Tongji”, which enables robots to perform a range of high-dynamic “extreme sports” movements, including backflips, Thomas spins, and martial arts kicks. With this new motion framework, humanoid robots can achieve a high success rate in executing these complex actions using a single set of algorithms.

Mastering complex movements such as flips, handstands, and breakdancing has long been a challenge in the field of robot control. Huang Siyuan, the director of the Embodied Robotics Center at the Beijing Institute, explained that the widespread use of reinforcement learning allows robots to gradually learn complex motions through extensive simulation training. However, as the action library expands, the robots’ control precision tends to decrease.

Unlike traditional reinforcement learning, which trains a unified strategy from scratch, the “Tongji” framework employs a two-phase learning approach. According to Huang, the research team first trains specialized “expert strategies” for different movements, then incorporates reinforcement learning that considers the real physical properties of motors. This significantly enhances the framework’s executability on real robots. Testing data indicates that this method has achieved over a 90% success rate across various high-dynamic action tasks, laying a foundation for more complex robot skill learning in the future.

This groundbreaking achievement is the work of a group of young researchers—doctoral students participating in the talent cultivation program of the Beijing Institute of General Artificial Intelligence. Huang, as a mentor in this program, noted that these students approached the institute with problem-solving perspectives and underwent comprehensive training from research to practical application, completing research work at an internationally advanced level on real robot platforms.

The development of the “Tongji” framework is rooted in Beijing’s rich innovation ecosystem. In April 2025, the institute launched the “Tongzhi Brain” platform, which is based on the core technology of the world’s first general intelligent humanoid, “Tongtong”. This platform equips robots with a universal decision-making center capable of thinking and controlling movement, thereby enhancing coordination. The “Tongji” framework is a crucial technological component of this motion control capability. Currently, the “Tongzhi Brain” is moving towards industrialization and is expected to enhance the movement and environmental adaptability of various robot models in the future.
