On April 27, 2025, the China Electric Power Enterprise Federation, German TÜV Rheinland Group, Jianheng Certification Center, Aixu Co., Ltd., and LONGi Green Energy jointly released the White Paper on the Development of Back Contact (BC) Battery Technology in Beijing. This is the world’s first authoritative report on BC technology aimed at the photovoltaic industry and the general public. The White Paper systematically explains the industrialization path, core advantages, and sustainable development potential of BC technology, marking the official entry of this “ultimate form of monocrystalline silicon solar cells” into a new phase of large-scale application.

In his speech, Zhang Tao, former director of the Industry Association Work Bureau of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, highlighted that breakthroughs in BC technology represent a significant shift for China’s photovoltaic industry from “catching up” to “leading.” Wu Jinhua, executive president of the Solar Power Branch of the China Electric Power Enterprise Federation, emphasized that BC technology will drive the photovoltaic industry towards higher efficiency and lower costs.

Professor Martin Green from the University of New South Wales in Australia congratulated the release of the White Paper via video, commending Chinese enterprises for their industrialization practices in the BC field and the future development potential of BC technology. Dr. Gao Qi, chief technical expert of solar services at TÜV Rheinland Group, analyzed the performance parameters and reliability advantages of BC technology from the perspective of testing and international certification, interpreting the relevant standards and testing systems. Zhou Gang, general manager of the Solar Division at Jianheng Certification Center, showcased the superior performance of BC component products through empirical data from practical projects.

Wang Yongqian, chief scientist at Aixu Co., Ltd., discussed the development history and future vision of photovoltaic technology, particularly BC technology, from the perspective of energy transformation. Xu Xixiang, chief scientist and vice president of the Central Research Institute at LONGi Green Energy, conducted an in-depth analysis of the process innovations in BC technology amid the iterative progress of photovoltaic technology. This year, BC battery efficiency was certified by ISFH, setting a new world record at 27.81%, just 1.3 percentage points away from the theoretical maximum efficiency.

BC batteries utilize a full-back contact electrode technology that integrates both positive and negative electrodes on the rear side of the battery, completely eliminating shading from the front grid lines of traditional batteries. This maximizes light absorption area, shifts the paradigm of photovoltaic cell design, and significantly enhances conversion efficiency, achieving breakthroughs in both optical and electrical performance. The industry widely recognizes it as the “ultimate form of monocrystalline silicon solar cells.”

During the roundtable discussion, participants including Li Zhengguo, founder and president of LONGi Green Energy; Shen Wenzhong, professor and director of the Solar Research Institute at Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Zhang Xiaochao, former deputy director of the New Energy Division at China Huaneng Group; Dr. Gao Qi; Zhou Gang; Sheng Jian, senior vice president of Aixu Co., Ltd.; and Liu Dongxue, deputy director of the Science and Technology Research Institute at China Three Gorges Corporation, shared insights and perspectives on the significance of the BC technology white paper, core breakthroughs in BC technology, and the challenges ahead. There was a consensus that BC has become a pinnacle of monocrystalline silicon battery technology, and that BC batteries, as the ultimate technology for monocrystalline silicon solar cells, have matured, poised to lead innovation in battery technology and the healthy development of the industry.

The White Paper is divided into seven chapters, deeply analyzing the principles of BC technology and its industrialization process. It covers crucial industry concerns, including the BC technology standard system and third-party verification, core performance advantages of BC components, application value of BC components, ecological construction of BC, and future development trends. Notably, several authoritative experts in the global photovoltaic field recommended the White Paper, including Chu Junhao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at Fudan University; Dr. Christos Monokroussos, solar and commercial products service technology expert and head of the solar and R&D technical capability center at TÜV Rheinland Greater China; Martin Green, known as the “father of solar energy”; Shen Wenzhong; Shen Hui, director of the Yangtze River Delta Solar Photovoltaic Technology Innovation Center; Wu Jinhua; Zhang Xiaochao; and Li Zhengguo, showcasing the high level of attention from various sectors in the photovoltaic industry toward the development of BC technology.

In recent years, thanks to significant technological breakthroughs such as laser patterning and wet process optimization, the production costs of BC battery components have been greatly reduced, and production efficiency has markedly improved, rapidly enhancing product competitiveness and laying a solid technical and market foundation for its swift entry into large-scale production. The release of this White Paper provides authoritative data and technical analysis, serving as a scientific guide for the industrialization of BC technology. As the “crown jewel” of crystalline silicon technology, BC technology is set to propel the global photovoltaic industry into a new era of higher efficiency and lower electricity costs, contributing Chinese wisdom to the global energy transition.
