Annual Meeting of the Central Enterprises New Energy Storage Innovation Alliance Held in Guangzhou

Annual

On May 22, under the guidance of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, the 2025 Annual Work Conference of the Central Enterprise New Energy Storage Innovation Consortium was held in Guangzhou. Themed “Harnessing Energy Storage for New Breakthroughs, Empowering the Dual Carbon New Journey,” the conference unveiled the consortium’s top ten achievements and key challenges for the year. It also featured the signing and awarding of cooperation agreements for new energy storage technologies and industrial platform collaborations, along with an exhibition of the consortium’s achievements.

The Central Enterprise New Energy Storage Innovation Consortium was jointly established in July 2024 by two major energy state-owned enterprises: State Grid Corporation of China and China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. Since its inception, the consortium has leveraged the advantages of the new national system, bringing together 34 state-owned enterprises and 106 universities and research institutions to achieve a series of significant results in related fields.

This conference announced the world’s first hundred-megawatt-class intelligent string-type energy storage system, the first black start urban grid project of a flow battery energy storage station, and the first megawatt-class supercapacitor energy storage system among its top ten annual achievements. The consortium has also planned and constructed 18 collaborative innovation bases across the country, with a total investment exceeding 12.6 billion yuan, driving the development of more than 40 key demonstration projects nationwide and promoting deep integration of technological and industrial innovation in the new energy storage sector.

The conference also highlighted ten pressing issues that need to be addressed to advance the development of new energy storage, providing direction for the consortium’s future research and enhancement of industrial capabilities. Currently, the new energy storage industry is at a critical stage of strategic transformation. With a flurry of national policies being introduced and ongoing structural reforms on the supply side, coupled with uncertainties in the international landscape, the industry faces numerous challenges.

During the meeting, the consortium launched an “Upgrade Action” initiative aimed at promoting “expansion and quality improvement” across ten key action areas, including top-level design, brand building, major project coordination, and optimization of assessment guidance. It was suggested to include key tasks such as “Artificial Intelligence + Energy Storage” and to release 14 typical scenarios for existing energy storage markets to enhance safety and utilization rates. The consortium is also looking to explore new markets for emergency power supply and grid function replacement scenarios.
