Alaska Invites South Korea to Attend Sustainable Energy Conference

Alaska

The government of Alaska has invited South Korean officials to attend the Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference, which is scheduled to take place from June 3 to June 5 in Anchorage. This invitation was extended to senior trade officials from major countries, including South Korea.

The invitation was sent out on June 2, coinciding with the 21st presidential election day in South Korea. This marks a strategic move by the United States to encourage South Korea’s participation in the Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, particularly as a new government is about to take office in South Korea.

The Alaska LNG project involves transporting natural gas extracted from fields in northern Alaska through a 1,300-kilometer pipeline, where it will then be liquefied and exported. The South Korean government, currently engaged in tariff negotiations with the U.S., is considering using participation in this LNG project as a bargaining chip. However, due to the high costs and uncertain commercial viability of the project, South Korea plans to send a delegation for a detailed assessment before making a decision on participation.

A representative from South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has confirmed receipt of the invitation and stated that they are currently deliberating on whether to attend the event.
