Advantech Launches AFE-E420: A Revolutionary Solution for EV Charging and Energy Storage Applications
TAIPEI, June 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Advantech (TWSE: 2395), a global leader in AIoT and Edge Computing, is excited to announce the launch of the new single board computer (SBC) AFE-E420 as part of its innovative AFE product series. This cutting-edge solution is designed to support electric vehicle (EV) charging and energy storage applications.
Utilizing NXP® Semiconductors and Arm technologies, the AFE-E420 delivers exceptional reliability, security, and scalable performance across various workloads, all while maintaining low power consumption and reduced thermal dissipation. This makes it an ideal and cost-effective option for field applications.
The AFE-E420 is powered by the latest NXP i.MX 93 application processor series, which enhances performance while minimizing power consumption through its upgraded Arm® Cortex®-A55 architecture. Additionally, it features an integrated Cortex-M33 co-processor that simplifies the management of real-time tasks and critical functions, such as monitoring communications between the charger and EV.
Notably, the i.MX 93 is the first in its family to incorporate the Arm Ethos-U65 microNPU, enabling developers to create advanced machine learning applications that are both cost-effective and energy-efficient. The advanced EdgeLock® secure enclave further enhances security across various deployment scenarios.
“The highly integrated i.MX 93 application processors combine the capabilities of the Arm Ethos-U65 microNPU with advanced security and a high degree of integration to deliver efficient, fast, and secure machine learning at the edge,” stated Alexandra Dopplinger, Director of Product Marketing for Building and Energy at NXP. “Advantech’s AFE-E420 SBC maximizes the i.MX 93 SoC’s comprehensive capabilities, ensuring a faster time to market for EV chargers and energy storage applications.”
The AFE-E420 is designed to seamlessly integrate both Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) and Smart Electric Car Controller (SECC), simplifying the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of EV chargers. Measuring just 145 x 115mm, it features dual displays, four CAN-FD ports, six selectable RS-232/422/485 ports, six RTD channels, and two control pilot ports.
To enhance EV charging capabilities, the AFE-E420 includes multiple independent CAN-FD and Powerline Communication (PLC) interfaces for compliance with CCS1, CCS2, NACS, GB/T, and CHAdeMo standards. Furthermore, Advantech collaborates with various Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to support ISO15118 and OCPP protocols, facilitating the deployment and maintenance of end devices. As a member of CharIN, Advantech ensures that its solutions adhere to the latest standards and meet market demands.
With its advanced processing capabilities, machine learning integration, and extensive compatibility, the AFE-E420 is positioned to transform EV charging and energy management, steering the industry towards a more efficient and sustainable future.
