Advancements in eVTOL Technology: The Rise of Hybrid and Pure Electric Aircraft

Advancements

eVTOL (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) technology is rapidly advancing, merging hybrid and pure electric power systems to enhance aerial transportation. As of May 18, 2025, the industry is witnessing significant developments in both hybrid and fully electric eVTOLs.

According to industry experts, the advancement of eVTOL technology is being driven by government policies and industry development, alongside technological progress. These factors have significantly accelerated the market growth for eVTOLs, as they are becoming increasingly viable for commercial applications.

During the recent China International Business Forum on Electric Aviation (CIBF2025), held from May 15 to May 16, many specialists discussed the advancements in eVTOL technology, highlighting the importance of electric propulsion systems. They noted that the current electric battery technology does not yet meet the demands for longer-range flights, making hybrid solutions crucial for the time being.

eVTOLs are expected to play a fundamental role in future urban transportation, providing rapid and flexible alternatives. The sector is estimated to reach a market scale of 1.5 million units by 2025 and 3.5 million units by 2035 according to projections from the Civil Aviation Administration of China. This growth reflects a broader trend in the aviation market towards electric and hybrid technologies.

Currently, the hybrid electric battery applications are still under development, with significant efforts being made towards scaling production. As of now, major companies in China have reported a total of 600 eVTOL products in development and more than 170,000 units produced.

In recent months, there has been a surge in eVTOL pre-orders in China, indicating strong market interest. As the aviation sector continues to transition towards electric and hybrid solutions, the eVTOL industry is poised for significant growth.

Hybrid technology remains a vital area of focus, as it balances the need for longer flight times and the limitations present in pure electric systems. The hybrid eVTOLs are expected to provide better performance in terms of range and efficiency, which are crucial for their acceptance in urban air mobility.

Looking ahead, the eVTOL industry is set to conduct its first test flights by the end of 2025. By 2027, major cities will likely see eVTOL services operational, paving the way for a new era of urban air transportation.

As the industry continues to innovate, eVTOLs are anticipated to become integral to urban mobility solutions, offering efficient transportation options to meet the growing demands of city populations.
