Accelerating the Integration of IoT Technology Across Various Fields
On April 4, 2026, Beijing – The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, along with eight other departments, jointly released the “Action Plan for Promoting Innovation and Development in the IoT Industry (2026-2028)”. This plan aims for a continuous emergence of new technologies, products, and models in the Internet of Things (IoT) sector by 2028. It seeks to enhance the industry’s innovation capabilities, achieve breakthroughs in key technologies such as sensing, networking, communication, data processing, and security, significantly improve the intelligence level of terminals and platforms, revise and develop over 50 advanced applicable standards, and cultivate 10 billion-level and 15 ten-million-level application fields. The goal is to reach a total of 10 billion connections for IoT terminals and exceed a core industry scale of 3.5 trillion yuan.
The IoT operates on sensing technology, utilizing communication networks to facilitate ubiquitous intelligent connections between people, machines, and objects, thereby bridging the digital and physical worlds. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China’s IoT industry has shown remarkable growth, characterized by its vast scale, leading standards, and widespread applications. However, challenges remain, including reliance on certain key core technologies, lack of interoperability across different terminal devices, and increasing risks related to network and data security.
The action plan outlines 16 specific tasks aimed at driving innovation in IoT devices, enhancing platform service efficiency, nurturing IoT application scenarios, solidifying the foundational network for IoT, and fostering an ecosystem for IoT industry development. These initiatives are designed to accelerate the comprehensive integration of IoT technology into production, consumption, and social governance, thereby promoting a deep fusion of the digital economy with the real economy and supporting the development of new productive forces.
