ABB has recently announced a collaboration with NVIDIA to integrate NVIDIA’s Omniverse simulation technology into ABB’s RobotStudio software platform. This partnership aims to enhance the transition of industrial robots from virtual training environments to real-world applications.
The primary objective of this collaboration is to address a long-standing challenge in the robotics industry known as the “Sim-to-Real Gap.” Traditionally, many tasks involving industrial robots required testing directly on production lines, which is often costly and time-consuming. By incorporating NVIDIA’s Omniverse technology, engineers will be able to carry out crucial activities in a digital twin factory, including:
- Robot program development
- Production line layout design
- AI vision training
- Automation process validation
This allows robots to undergo extensive training in a virtual setting before being deployed in actual factories. The new system, named RobotStudio HyperReality, is expected to be launched in the second half of 2026.
ABB has stated that through a combination of physical-level simulation and real control systems, the discrepancies between a robot’s behavior in a virtual environment and that in reality can be reduced to approximately 1%. This advancement means:
- Robots can complete training in virtual environments.
- AI vision models can utilize synthetic data for extensive training.
- A significant reduction in the number of real-world tests needed.
- The entire design and verification of production lines can be conducted on computers before being implemented in real factories.
This new technology is anticipated to significantly enhance industrial automation efficiency, with ABB projecting:
- A reduction of up to 80% in production line debugging time.
- A 40% decrease in engineering costs.
- A 50% faster time to market for new products.
Manufacturers like Foxconn are already testing this system for automating consumer electronics production lines.
As AI and robotics converge, industrial automation is entering a new phase. NVIDIA has recently introduced the concept of “Physical AI,” aiming to enable robots to not only execute fixed programs but also to perceive and comprehend the real world through AI. The collaboration between ABB and NVIDIA represents a significant step towards integrating AI, industrial robotics, and digital twins. In future factories, numerous robots may first learn in virtual environments before transitioning to real production lines.
