24M Unveils Enhanced Eternalyte Electrolyte for Superior EV Charging and Cold-Weather Performance

24M

24M Technologies has unveiled an enhanced version of its Eternalyte electrolyte, aimed at improving both the charging rate and cold-temperature performance of batteries. Initially introduced in February 2024 for lithium metal batteries, this new formulation is also compatible with silicon- and graphite-based batteries, making it ideal for applications that require high power and excellent low-temperature performance.

According to 24M, the Eternalyte electrolyte provides significantly increased ionic conductivity, boasting values of approximately 26mS/cm at 25°C and a Li+ transference number of around 0.6. This enhancement allows for charging rates up to three times higher than standard electrolytes without compromising energy density, irrespective of the battery chemistry used. Furthermore, the high ionic conductivity of Eternalyte maintains battery performance even at very low temperatures. It has been reported that cells using Eternalyte retain over 80% of their capacity at a 1C rate and at temperatures as low as -20°C, ensuring that electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with this electrolyte experience minimal to no range reduction in cold weather.

The viscosity of Eternalyte is compatible with traditional manufacturing processes, facilitating easy integration into existing production lines. Naoki Ota, CEO of 24M, commented on the electrolyte’s versatility: “Originally designed for lithium metal batteries, we quickly realized that the transformative nature of Eternalyte has far-reaching benefits for all types of batteries. Now, with the combination of Eternalyte and Impervio separators, we are able to enhance safety and performance, improve consumer experiences, and open new markets for electrically powered products.”
