2025 Global Energy Internet Conference Held in Beijing

2025

On September 9, the 2025 Global Energy Internet Conference was held in Beijing, with Vice President Han Zheng delivering a keynote speech. He noted that during a United Nations summit in September 2015, President Xi Jinping proposed the concept of building a global energy internet, aiming to meet global electricity demands through clean and green methods. This initiative has received widespread recognition and positive response from the international community over the past decade.

Han emphasized that the global energy system is undergoing profound changes, with a rapid transition towards a low-carbon energy structure. China has been a steadfast advocate and significant contributor to global green development. In light of new changes and trends, President Xi proposed a new energy security strategy focusing on “Four Revolutions and One Cooperation,” providing direction for energy development in China in the new era and paving a unique path for its energy evolution.

He presented four key proposals: First, to jointly promote the green and low-carbon transformation of energy. This includes deepening cooperation in renewable energy generation, grid interconnectivity, and smart energy solutions, thereby facilitating the effective implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. Second, to jointly advance energy technology innovation by collaborating on the research and development of clean energy utilization technologies, fostering deep integration between energy and sectors such as modern information technology, new materials, and advanced manufacturing. Third, to jointly enhance sustainable energy development by improving energy accessibility for developing countries, thus strengthening their energy security capabilities. Lastly, to promote cooperation in energy resources and production capacity across borders and regions, aiming for complementary advantages and mutually beneficial outcomes.

Prior to the conference, Han Zheng toured the exhibition area showcasing achievements and engaged in discussions with representatives from participating organizations and companies.

This event marks a significant milestone, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the global energy internet initiative. Officially opened on September 8, the conference spans three days and includes a general assembly, 24 parallel forums, and an exhibition.

Xin Baoan, chairman of the Global Energy Internet Development Cooperation Organization and president of the China Electricity Council, chaired the general assembly on the morning of September 9 and delivered a keynote address. Liu Zhenmin, China’s Special Envoy on Climate Change Affairs, and Yuan Da, Secretary General of the National Development and Reform Commission, also spoke at the conference, alongside Xiao Zonghui, a member of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission.

Xin stated that over the past decade, with strong support from the United Nations, various governments, and enterprises, the cooperation organization has transitioned the global energy internet initiative from concept to action, turning ideas into reality. The initiative is now integrated into key frameworks such as the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and biodiversity protection efforts. It has been mentioned in the United Nations Sustainable Development Policy Recommendations Report for six consecutive years and has received widespread recognition and support from over 100 countries and international organizations.

He outlined five actions to accelerate the construction of a global energy internet: First, to expedite the reliable replacement of clean energy by promoting large-scale and efficient development of various clean energy sources, enhancing their economic viability and reliability to fully replace fossil fuels. Second, to accelerate the electrification process in industrial, construction, transportation, agriculture, and residential sectors, aiming for a comprehensive and deep replacement of fossil fuels with green electricity and hydrogen production. Third, to enhance energy and electricity interconnectivity by strengthening cross-border and cross-continental grid connections, promoting the digital and intelligent transformation of grids, enabling a broader, more efficient, and cost-effective optimization of clean energy. Fourth, to foster innovation in energy technologies and industries, focusing on key areas such as new energy, advanced storage solutions, and smart grids. Fifth, to strengthen international cooperation in energy and electricity, facilitating policy communication and collaboration among nations, deepening energy trade and capacity cooperation, and establishing a fair and balanced global energy governance system that allows all countries to share the benefits of transformative development.

Since 2016, the cooperation organization has hosted six Global Energy Internet Conferences, with this being the seventh. This year’s conference theme is “Global Energy Internet: Meeting Global Electricity Demand through Clean and Green Methods,” co-hosted by the cooperation organization and several UN agencies, as well as the Latin American Energy Organization. Nearly 1,000 guests from over 100 countries attended the event.

During the conference, the cooperation organization released several research reports, including the “Global Power Development Transformation Report 2025,” the “Global Energy Internet Development and Outlook 2025,” and “Promoting Global South Modernization through Green Energy Development.” Additionally, cooperation agreements were signed with eight organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme and the Asian Development Bank. The 24 parallel forums covered eight major areas, including intelligent future, energy interconnectivity, market policies, industrial equipment, climate environment, technological innovation, green finance, and energy transformation, fostering in-depth discussions and generating new ideas and solutions to contribute to sustainable development.
