2025 China Sustainable Fuel Industry Summit Held in Hunan

2025

The 2025 China Sustainable Fuel Industry Summit took place in Changsha, Hunan from April 19 to 20. This event was jointly organized by the Yunnan Clean Fuel Association, the Carbon Neutrality Professional Committee of the China Energy Research Society, and Geely Zhejiang Green Hydrogen Technology Service Co., Ltd.. The summit focused on the theme “Empowering through the Energy Law, Building New Productive Forces.” As the first domestic industry event centered on the Energy Law and its focus on the entire methanol fuel industry chain, it brought together leading experts, industry pioneers, and policymakers to explore breakthroughs in sustainable fuel technology and pathways for industrialization, thereby contributing to the green energy revolution.

The opening ceremony commenced with speeches from representatives of the organizers. Jiang Bing, former Director of the Planning Department of the National Energy Administration and Chairperson of the Carbon Neutrality Committee, emphasized the need to accelerate the energy revolution to achieve the “3060” dual carbon goals, promoting the integrated development of green fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol. Liu Mingbo, President of the Yunnan Clean Fuel Association, highlighted that innovation is the core driving force behind building a clean energy system and called for collaborative efforts to overcome technical bottlenecks. Cao Ning, Director of Network Development at Geely Methanol Energy Company, shared practical experiences regarding the nationwide layout of methanol vehicles, proposing a collaborative development model of “Vehicle-Station-Network.”

The conference featured in-depth discussions on industrial opportunities arising from the dual carbon goals and the implementation of the Energy Law. Cao Cunshu, Vice President of the Yunnan Clean Fuel Association, emphasized in his keynote speech that “the establishment of green liquid fuel refueling stations is a critical step in promoting the large-scale application of methanol fuel.” He noted that it is essential to overcome challenges related to policy coordination, technical standards, and infrastructure to create a collaborative industrial ecosystem. Drawing on practices from Yunnan Province, he suggested measures such as optimizing investment models and strengthening regional cooperation to facilitate the integration of methanol fuels in transportation and energy sectors. His remarks resonated strongly with attendees, providing practical insights for the industry.

International academician Liu Ke from the Australian Academy of Engineering and several experts called for the formulation of national standards for green methanol that are suited to local conditions. He also detailed the progress in developing standards like the “Specifications for Methanol Fuel Applications in Vehicles.” The conference included over ten specialized presentations and roundtable discussions covering hot topics such as policy interpretation, technological innovation, standard formulation, and compliance operations. Geely Methanol Energy Company showcased research and development achievements in methanol vehicles, along with its national refueling network strategy, while the Global Methanol Industry Association shared international experiences regarding renewable methanol. Legal experts conducted a thorough analysis of compliance risks and response strategies following the implementation of the Energy Law.

Furthermore, participants had the opportunity to experience practical applications in the industry through test rides in methanol vehicles and demonstrations of explosion-proof equipment. During the summit, several significant collaborations were established. Companies such as Shandong Dinghui Petrochemical Co., Ltd. and Hunan Jinzongxin Petroleum Co., Ltd. reached strategic cooperation on “Green Methanol Production and Storage Technology” and the promotion of “Green Methanol Vehicles and Refueling Stations in the Two Lakes Region,” collectively advancing the large-scale application of methanol fuel in Central and East China, and exploring a collaborative model for the entire industrial chain from production to storage, transport, refueling, and application, injecting new momentum into regional energy transformation.

In the closing ceremony, the organizers called on all sectors to join efforts in advancing the construction of a methanol fuel standard system, fostering technological innovation, and exploring new business models, collectively building a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system. This summit not only provided a high-level platform for industry exchange but also catalyzed practical cooperation and outcomes, propelling the development of China’s sustainable fuel industry forward.
