15th National Geothermal Conference Kicks Off in Beijing, Focusing on Carbon Neutrality Goals

15th

The 15th National Geothermal Conference opened in Beijing on May 22, 2025, under the theme “Geothermal + New Quality Productivity: Supporting Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality.” The conference also featured a national exhibition on geothermal energy and ground source heat pumps. Its purpose is to showcase the latest achievements in China’s geothermal energy industry, discuss future development directions, and promote the efficient and large-scale development of the geothermal sector to help achieve the dual carbon goals.

Geothermal energy, as a significant component of China’s new energy landscape, not only has abundant reserves but also substantial development potential. Currently, geothermal energy plays a crucial role in heating, cooling, and reducing carbon emissions in modern agriculture and industry. However, Gui Xiaoyang, Deputy Director of the New Energy and Renewable Energy Department of the National Energy Administration, pointed out that the development and utilization of geothermal energy still face many challenges. There is a pressing need for the industry to vigorously promote advanced technologies and actively push forward project developments.

China possesses rich geothermal resources, accounting for one-sixth of the world’s total geothermal resources, and has consistently ranked first globally in direct geothermal utilization for many years. With continuous technological advancements, the cost of geothermal heating is expected to decrease gradually, further enhancing its position in the future energy structure. Therefore, it is essential to continually innovate exploration and utilization technologies for geothermal energy to improve its efficiency and economic value.

Additionally, the National Development and Reform Commission and other departments have jointly issued an “Action Plan for Promoting High-Quality Development of the Heat Pump Industry,” providing direction for the sustainable development of the heat pump sector. The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has also released documents related to urban renewal, emphasizing the need to meet ecological, green, low-carbon, and residential comfort requirements with the support of renewable energies like geothermal energy.

During the conference, Chen Yanhua, Chief Engineer Consultant at the China Academy of Building Research and Director of the Geothermal Industry Working Committee of the China Technical Supervision Information Association, stated that ground source heat pumps should be adapted to local conditions. He emphasized the importance of considering local climate, economic levels, and residents’ habits in the scientific design and selection of appropriate solutions to ensure orderly utilization and development, thereby aiding energy conservation and emission reduction.

Chen Zemin, Chairman of Wanjing New Energy Co., Ltd., shared his clean energy design philosophy and practices during the meeting. Adhering to the concept of “drawing electricity from the sky, heating from the ground, extracting heat from thin air, and utilizing geothermal energy storage,” he has developed the Wanjing Zero Carbon Energy Port, creating an innovative system for multi-dimensional clean energy utilization.

Several experts also delivered keynote speeches at the conference, collaboratively exploring the future development of geothermal energy. This conference has injected new momentum into the development of the geothermal industry and demonstrated China’s firm commitment and concrete actions toward achieving its dual carbon goals.
