NEMA Publishes Standard for EV Owners to Export Power Back to Grid
On February 19, 2025, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) announced the release of its Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) Power Export Permitting Standard. This standard outlines the technical parameters that enable electric vehicle (EV) owners to use their vehicles as mobile energy storage units and sell surplus energy back to the grid.
The new standard specifies the requirements for equipment to facilitate bidirectional charging, which allows electricity to flow both to and from the vehicle, as opposed to the conventional one-way electricity flow. This capability enables electric vehicles to transfer power back to the grid.
Key characteristics are defined across three critical domains: electrical, communications, and cybersecurity. These specifications will govern the permitting of power export between EVSE and an electric power system. With the implementation of bidirectional technology—such as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-building/home (V2B, V2H)—electric vehicles can serve as energy storage devices on wheels, effectively supplying power to homes, buildings, and the grid itself.
Additionally, this standard has the potential to benefit electric vehicle owners financially by allowing them to store energy during off-peak hours or when the vehicle is not in use, and then sell that power back to the grid during peak demand periods.
“Advancing bidirectional charging technologies will play a pivotal role in improving our nation’s grid resiliency and help electric vehicle owners use their cars for more than just getting from point A to point B,” said Patrick Hughes, senior VP of technical affairs at NEMA. “NEMA’s Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) Power Export Permitting Standard is an important tool to reach these goals, and local jurisdictions should reference this standard when permitting these systems.”
NEMA’s Mobility Sector developed this standard as a resource to enhance grid resiliency and to address the current realities of the electrification landscape.
