Enphase Energy Increases Deployments of Legacy NEM System Expansion Solution in California

March 3, 2025

FREMONT, Calif., March 03, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Enphase Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENPH), a global leader in energy technology and the foremost supplier of microinverter-based solar and battery systems, has announced an increase in the deployment of its solution for expanding legacy net energy metering (NEM) solar energy systems in California. This comes as utilities in the state streamline their approval processes.

Homeowners can now expand their systems without jeopardizing their NEM status on existing setups, thanks to the new Enphase® Energy System™ configurations that feature IQ® Microinverters, IQ® Batteries, and Enphase Power Control. Enphase introduced its solution for expanding legacy NEM systems in California last year, and since then, the application process for installing these systems with top California utilities has become more efficient. Hundreds of systems have already been approved, with many more anticipated to follow.

As many solar homeowners in California are now consuming more energy than they produce—due to the growing electrification of homes and transportation—previously, those enrolled in legacy NEM programs (1.0 and 2.0) faced challenges in expanding their systems without switching to NEM 3.0, which offers lower export rates. However, with the new Enphase system configurations and power control features, homeowners can broaden their systems while retaining the benefits of their legacy NEM status. The existing system can continue to export energy to the grid, while the new system is designed to serve the increased energy consumption of the household without exporting to the grid. This development will help homeowners manage rising energy needs, reduce electricity bills, and create more business opportunities for installers.

Installers are encouraged to check with their local California utilities for any potential charges related to the implementation of the new systems.

Mike Teresso, president at Baker Electric Home Energy, stated, “The streamlined approval process for expanding legacy systems by California utilities has enabled us to serve our customers more efficiently and effectively. Enphase’s solution is helping us meet growing energy demands while providing homeowners with the flexibility they need for the future.”

John Almond, CEO of Semper Solaris, expressed appreciation for the simplified approval process, saying, “Our customers want to add more solar and storage without losing the value of their existing systems, and now they can do just that. This is a win for homeowners and a significant opportunity for installers like us to assist more people in managing their growing energy needs.”

Ed Murray, president of Aztec Solar, added, “Expanding solar systems under legacy NEM used to be a challenge. Now, with California’s streamlined application process and Enphase’s innovative solution, we can easily design solutions that enable savings and provide homeowners with greater energy independence. This is a significant advancement for California solar!”

Additionally, Enphase’s design and proposal software platform, Solargraf®, can assist installers in seamlessly designing and generating proposals for expanded legacy NEM systems. For new systems, the platform can also optimize solar and battery projects to maximize savings under the new California solar regulations.

Ken Fong, senior vice president and general manager of the Americas and APAC at Enphase Energy, remarked, “This is precisely the kind of progress we want to see—utilities making it easier for homeowners to expand their clean energy systems without unnecessary barriers. Our software and hardware solution, combined with a more efficient utility approval process, allows homeowners to derive greater value from solar and battery systems while enabling installers to grow their businesses swiftly. We are committed to supporting both installers and homeowners as they explore these new opportunities.”
