Evansville, Ind. – CenterPoint Energy’s Indiana electric division has initiated its 2025 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) process. This initiative aims to shape the company’s long-term strategy for electric generation and address the power needs of its 150,000 customers in southwestern Indiana. The IRP process, which occurs every three years, involves a thorough analysis of electric generation options and includes extensive stakeholder engagement.
As CenterPoint assesses Indiana’s future power generation requirements, it remains dedicated to delivering reliable energy through both dispatchable and renewable sources while transitioning to a diverse energy portfolio. Key upcoming projects include the Posey County solar array, which will provide 191 MW, and the new A.B. Brown natural gas-fired generation facility, expected to contribute 460 MW by 2025. Additionally, the company plans to continue operating the F.B. Culley Generating Station Unit 3 using coal until 2027. This strategy allows time for evaluating future generation needs and determining the energy mix while considering the impact on customer bills and supporting the increasing energy demand in the region.
“We are excited to continue addressing our customers’ energy needs by bringing new, diverse generation resources online as part of CenterPoint’s long-term transformation in southwestern Indiana,” stated Shane Bradford, Vice President of Indiana Electric. “By pausing the Culley Unit 3 conversion from coal to natural gas, we can reassess long-term energy solutions while balancing affordability and reliability. Our upcoming IRP will include a comprehensive review of generation resources for the next 20 years.”
CenterPoint is committed to fulfilling its customers’ energy needs while adapting to changing market and regulatory conditions. Through the IRP process, the company will explore strategies to ensure long-term reliability, affordability, resiliency, sustainability, and regional growth, all while considering market trends and system requirements. As part of this initiative, the company will collaborate with stakeholders to evaluate its generation mix and the potential future demand for renewables, natural gas infrastructure, and grid modernization.
To keep the public informed and gather feedback, CenterPoint will host a series of public stakeholder meetings in 2025:
– Public stakeholder meeting #1 – March 19, 2025
– Public stakeholder meeting #2 – May 14, 2025
– Public stakeholder meeting #3 – July 23, 2025
– Public stakeholder meeting #4 – September 23, 2025
