BYD to Build the ‘World’s Largest’ Battery Storage Projects
Chinese energy giant BYD has recently signed a contract to construct the largest battery storage projects in the world for Saudi Arabia. The initiative will involve establishing facilities across five sites, totaling an impressive 12.5 GWh of energy storage capacity.
To put this into perspective, the average household in the United States consumes approximately 1,000 kWh of electricity per month. Since 1 GWh equals 1 million kilowatt hours, BYD’s system could hypothetically power around 1,042 homes for an entire year with the energy stored in its batteries.
This contract between BYD and the Saudi Electricity Company aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative, which aims for the nation to generate 50% of its electricity from renewable sources within the next five years. This endeavor is part of a broader strategy to achieve net zero carbon emissions across various industries by 2060.
Each site will feature BYD’s MC Cube-T Energy Storage System (ESS), which utilizes the company’s efficient and compact Blade batteries, also used in its electric vehicles. The system is designed to integrate all its components, including cooling systems, electronics, and protective casings, into a compact footprint.
The combined capacity of these five sites will enable them to store nearly four times more energy than the current largest battery energy storage facility, which is the 3.287-GWh Edwards & Sanborn project located in Kern County, California. This achievement will mark a significant milestone in Saudi Arabia’s energy storage objectives.
Recently, Saudi Arabia has been actively developing its local infrastructure, having connected its existing largest battery energy storage system—the 2-GWh Bisha facility—to its grid just last month. The nation is already among the top ten global markets for energy storage and has the potential to rise to third place by next year, following China and the United States, if it meets its goal of establishing 22 GWh of operational energy storage by 2026.
